A new free online course invites participants to explore how data can be used to confront abortion stigma and move public discussions beyond myths and misinformation. Facing Abortion Stigma with Data explores how abortion stigma shapes lives and conversations, individually, socially, and structurally.
Rooted in feminist values and a commitment to reproductive justice, the program blends knowledge-building with space for reflection and reframing. Learners are encouraged to explore their own relationship with abortion, recognize stigmatizing narratives, and unlearn harmful assumptions.
Through six guided modules, participants develop strategies to:
- Encourage informed discussions rooted in evidence within their specific contexts
- Use data to counter myths and challenge disinformation
- Shift dominant narratives toward dignity and rights
The course is designed for activists, educators, designers, doulas, and professionals, as well as anyone interested in addressing abortion stigma from a wider social and cultural viewpoint. It is free, fully online, and accessible worldwide. Lina Lopez, founder and director of Viva Futura and AbortionData.org, highlighted the value of the course for participants:
“This course shows how data can be a powerful tool to cut through stigma and misinformation. By learning to use evidence in thoughtful and empathetic ways, participants are better equipped to challenge harmful narratives and to advocate for dignity and rights.”
About the initiative
The course is based on the work of AbortionData.org, an initiative led by Viva Futura. The platform is dedicated to reshaping the narrative around abortion through the power of facts and data. The development of the course was also supported in part through a Seed Grant from Abortion Conversation Projects.
Viva Futura is a digital nonprofit organization based in Estonia. The organization uses the power of information to create environments in which people can develop their full potential in society. We envision a world where everyone, regardless of gender or background, has control over their bodies. Through the transformative power of information and collective action, we advance reproductive and gender justice by creating new narratives; we strive for a society where all people live with trust, hope, and gentle strength.
